Lithuanian border guards report an increase in the number of illegal migrants trying to enter Lithuania from Belarus. They also describe the work of the Belarusian border guards "sluggish" in investigating incidents, says Delfi.
According to the data of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania, 90 migrants have illegally crossed the border since the beginning of the year. Although the majority of them were Iraqis, there have been recorded cases where Belarusians chose to enter Lithuania illegally. Since the beginning of the year by the end of last week as many as 21 Belarusians had illegally crossed the state border and entered Lithuania.
At the same time, according to the service, the approach of Belarusian officials to the prevention illegal migration has changed. "The main consequence of the changed approach to cooperation is the more complicated border protection and sluggish work of the Belarusian border service in the investigation of border incidents," public relations representative of the service Giedrius Mishutis said.
According to him, there are cases when Lithuanian border guards record violations and detain violators, but Belarusian officials refuse to meet.
"After receiving the refusal, the Lithuanian side provides evidence of the illegal border crossing in writing, which the agencies of the neighbor country do not recognize and require additional evidence. After providing additional evidence and even after appealing to the chief state border commissioner, the facts of border crossing are either not recognized or remain without response," said Mishutis.
